Faruq Al-Omari a professor of Computer Engineering received his PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), Texas, USA in 1998, and his MSc and BSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology, Jordan in 1992 and 1989, respectively. He was granted a full scholarship to pursue his PhD studies at UTA from Yarmouk University, Jordan. Since 1998, he has been with the Computer Engineering Department, Yarmouk University, Jordan. Prof. Al-Omari has served as the Head of the Computer Engineering Department, Vice Dean and Dean of the Engineering College, Yarmouk University in the period 2003-2010. While on a sabbatical leave, Prof. Al-Omari has served as the CEO of Jordanian Universities Network (JUNet) in the period 2011-2017. JUNet is a non-profit firm owned by public universities in Jordan responsible for providing member universities with ICT infrastructure and services. Prof. Al-Omari has served on a number of ruling and advisory boards and committees.
His research interests are in the broad field image processing and pattern recognition with emphases on medical image processing and analysis, image and video database indexing and retrieval systems, parallel algorithms for content-based multimedia retrieval, data knowledge and discovery, data clustering and data mining, video abstraction, cryptography and steganography, data security and cybersecurity, machine learning, neural networks and fuzzy logic, and computer vision. In recent years, Prof. Al-Omari has developed interest in research topics related to Smart Learning Environments in the light of Education 4.0 requirements, technology acceptance, digital transformation, future trends in technology, and future labor market needs. He has published over 40 articles in world class international journals and conferences. He serves as a member of the editorial board for a number of international journals. He was invited as a speaker in a number of conferences and workshops and was a member of scientific, technical and advisory committees in several conferences.
