Dr. Konrad Gunesch is an Associate Professor of International Education and Linguistics in the College of Media and Mass Communication (CMMC) at the American University in the Emirates (AUE). He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Education at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, with a specialization in Cultural and Language Studies. His dissertation examined the relationship between multilingualism as the personal mastery of many languages, and cosmopolitanism as individual cultural identity related to internationalism. Among over eighty peer-reviewed publications, he has authored and edited several books and numerous articles in journals of International Education, Literary Studies, or Cultural Studies, such as the Journal of Research in International Education, or the Journal of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature, among chapters in international research handbooks, edited volumes, or academic encyclopedias. His current research focuses on cultural expressions of educational ideals in media, such as instances of language mastery, cultural competence, lifelong learning, or student motivation expressed in popular artworks or movies. Dr. Konrad’s research interests span critical and cultural studies, film and media studies, as well as a range if interdisciplinary investigations. On those and related topics, he has given over seventy certified international, official and invited conference keynote speeches, among others at the universities of Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, London, Lisbon, Washington in Rome, Prague, Athens, Istanbul, Teramo and Wardan, and over hundred and seventy international conference presentations.
Prior to joining the American University in the Emirates in Dubai, Dr. Konrad taught at Laureate International Universities in Panama and at the Higher Colleges in Technology in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, and worked as a Research Associate and Assistant at the Universities of London, Bath, and Hong Kong. He has taught over fifty subjects, on Master’s and Bachelor’s level, in the wider areas of Humanities, Cultural, Social and Liberal Studies, Communicative Culture and Practice, English Language Teaching, International Legal and Ethical Studies, and International Marketing and Business. Dr. Gunesch holds a double MA in Contemporary European Political Culture from the Universities of Bath in the United Kingdom as well as Sorbonne University in Paris, France, a postgraduate-level degrees in German and International Law from the University of Bonn in Germany, and the German Bar Exam from the German Land Northrhine-Westphalia, making him an Attorney. In addition to his work in higher education, he has worked as a legal civil servant in international organizations such as the European Union representation in Germany, or the Canadian-German Chamber of Commerce in Montreal. He also took certified linguistic and cultural studies in Montreal, Hong Kong and Dubai, integrated certified legal studies and internships in The Netherlands, Canada and Sweden, and certified integrated studies as part of the Master’s degrees in Italy and Spain.
